Most people cock their heads in confusion when they hear the word linguistics. Some assume it is solely a realm of the study of foreign languages, but this is only a small part of it. Linguistics is the study of languages, on a technical level, from phoneme, to morpheme, and the syntax of phrases. There are many subdisplines aside from the bare bones of introductory linguistics. I have added languages I want to study because I am lazy.

But these are only some of the linguistics structures you will delve into. There is also Semantics, Pragmatics and others.

If you study linguistics, and syntax, you will probably be taught Chomskyan linguistics first. Chomskyan linguistics has great historical precedent, as Chomsky is often regarded as the father of modern linguistics. But Chomskyan generative syntax is not the only syntax you will learn, there are dispenciances in the structures of it, its competence in assessing the syntax of words and phrases. There are also revisions to his theories like binding theory.

I suppose if you neglected to mention hardware as the base coat of an operating system, the kernel would be as to applications as phonetics is to semantics or pragmatics.
